Marcella "Sali" Grace Eiler (September 30, 1987 – September 15, 2008) was an American social activist[1] from Eugene, Oregon who was raped and murdered in Mexico two weeks before her 21st birthday. For the last three years of her life, she had been living and working intermittently in Oaxaca's provincial capital, Oaxaca de Juárez, as a dance teacher and social activist, and acted as an observer for an indigenous rights organization.
Eiler's body was found on September 24, 2008 near the Oaxaca town of San José del Pacifico,[1] where she had arrived to dance at a fundraiser. Newspapers reported that after Mexico City resident Omar Yoguez Singu admitted that he had killed Eiler with a machete, citizens oversaw his delivery into police custody. He was found guilty of murder and is serving sentence in a Oaxacan prison.
Her death sparked oupourings of support to end violence against women that took place in Oaxaca and San Diego. Her life and death are recounted here:
Señor de Fuego - Lulacruza | |
Ah señor de fuego | Ah lord of fire |
Ah Señor solar | Ah Solar Lord |
Me enseña un camino viejo | Show me an old road |
Que se camina al caminar, caminar | Walking when walking, walking |
Tengo en mis manos armas secretas: | I have secret weapons in my hands: |
Estrellas, fuego, palpitar | Stars, fire, throbbing |
Las partículas nunca están quietas, | The particles are never quiet, |
Yo me pongo a respirar | I start to breathe |
Con calma, con calma | Calmly, calmly |
A veces tengo miedo | Sometimes I'm scared |
De que el tiempo no nos va alcanzar | That time will not reach us |
Para transformar y aprender de nuevo | To transform and learn again |
Y ahora se que conmigo no hay final | And now I know that with me there is no end |
Viene para mi a recordar | Comes for me to remember |
Fuerza de luz natural | Force of natural light |
Con calma, con calma | Calmly, calmly |
